Take a Body Composition Scan

Choose a protocol, capture each site, re-do a reading, and review past scans.

The Body Composition Scan tab is where you capture body fat readings with your BodyMetrix Device. Circumferences and body ratios have their own tab. See Record Circumferences and Body Ratios.

Before you scan

  1. Open the client’s profile from Home.
  2. Confirm Weight, Height, Age, and Gender at the top of the Body Composition Scan page. These are required for an accurate result.
  3. Check that your Device is connected. The status at the top right should read Device connected in green. If it doesn’t, plug the wand in and wait a second or two. Still not connecting? See BodyMetrix Wand Not Detected.

Choose what to measure
Use the Body Composition Measurement dropdown to pick a protocol, such as 1-point bicep or a multi-site protocol. The points table below the dropdown lists the sites you’ll capture.

The protocol list matches the client’s gender. Men and women see different formula sets, and some formulas measure different sites by gender. For example, the female 3-site Jackson & Pollock uses Thigh, Tricep, and Hip.

BodyMetrix Software YSC: body composition uses the High School Wrestling (NFHS) protocol only. It’s shown as a fixed label with no dropdown.

Capture a reading

  1. Apply ultrasound gel and place the wand on the highlighted site. The on-screen diagram and instructions show the exact location.
  2. When the status reads Ready, press wand button, press the button on the wand.
  3. The waveform appears, and the Fat [mm] and Muscle values fill in for that site.
  4. Take the required number of reads at the site. The # column shows your progress, for example 2/3. Each site needs a minimum number of good reads, 3 by default. You can change this in Setup > Preferences > Minimum scans per site. A distinct chime plays when the site is complete.
  5. When a site is complete, the wand pauses, so a button press can never add an extra read to a finished site. Choose Next point → to move on, or Rescan to clear that site’s reads and start it over.
    • Shortcut: pressing the wand button while paused moves you to the next point. The press is never recorded as a read, so you can keep working without returning to the keyboard.
    • If a site’s reads disagree too much to combine (⚠), the wand stays paused and Rescan is the only way forward.
  6. Repeat for each site in the protocol.

The body fat percentage appears once every site has its minimum number of reads.

Reading confidence
After each read, an advisory Confidence indicator (High, Medium, or Low) shows for the active site, with a short reason such as “readings vary” or “competing peak in signal.” It blends how closely your reads agree, how clearly the fat and muscle boundary stands out in the signal, and how many reads you took. Waist and Hip are held to a tighter standard because their boundary is harder to read.

Confidence is informational only. It never changes, blocks, or discards a reading, and you can always proceed. A Low rating is a suggestion to rescan for a steadier result. Low-confidence assessments are marked with a small ⚑ in Load past scan and in Trends, so you can spot them later.

Re-do a reading

  1. Select the site’s row in the points table. At a completed site, the wand is paused.
  2. Click Rescan. This clears that site’s reads and starts it over at 0/3.
  3. Take a fresh set of reads. The body fat percentage recalculates when the site is complete again.

Rescans in the same session update the same assessment, so Load past scan shows one entry with the final values.

Load a past scan
Past scans are grouped by assessment, meaning the set of sites you measured in one session, so recalling one brings back every site from that reading at once.

  1. Open the client and go to Body Composition Scan.
  2. Click Load past scan in the Body Composition card.
  3. Pick an assessment. Each row shows the date and time, the protocol, how many points were measured, and the recorded body fat percentage.
  4. The whole assessment loads read-only. Every measured site appears in the table with its Fat [mm] (and Muscle where applicable). Click any site row to see that site’s waveform.

While you’re viewing a past assessment, a Viewing past scan banner shows its date, protocol, point count, and body fat percentage. Click New Scan to return to live capture. This also restores any live reading you had in progress. A past assessment is read-only and never overwrites a live session.

See every scan: the Gallery > Scans tab lists every saved scan with filters and a side-by-side compare. See Review Progress: Trends, Compare, and Gallery.

Tips

  • Use ultrasound gel for good contact.
  • Unplugging and replugging the wand is safe at any time. BodyMetrix reconnects automatically.
  • If a reading looks off, check Weight, Height, Age, and Gender first. They drive the result.
