Set Up Automatic Backups

Back up BodyMetrix automatically, including to your own cloud storage

BodyMetrix can back up your data automatically, on a schedule, with no further action needed. Each backup is an encrypted .bmx file protected by a backup password, and you can restore it on any computer running BodyMetrix. This works the same way in BodyMetrix Software Pro and YSC.

Backups run in the background, so BodyMetrix doesn't need to be open.

Set up automatic backups

  1. Open BodyMetrix and click Setup.
  2. Enter your 6-digit PIN.
  3. On the Setup & Migration page, scroll to Automatic Backups.
  4. Backup folder: click Choose Folder... and select where backups should be saved. To back up to the cloud, choose a cloud-synced folder. See below.
  5. Frequency: choose how often to back up. Daily is recommended.
  6. Keep last: choose how many backups to keep. Older ones are removed automatically. 14 backups gives you two weeks of daily history.
  7. Backup password: click Set Password... (or Change Password...) and create a password. Store it somewhere safe, such as a password manager. You'll need it to restore any backup.
  8. Check Enable automatic backups.
  9. Click Back Up Now to run your first backup immediately. Last backup shows the date and time with a check mark when it succeeds.

Back up to your cloud storage
BodyMetrix saves backups to a folder on your computer. If that folder syncs to your cloud storage, every backup is copied to the cloud automatically. This protects your data even if your computer is lost, stolen, or fails.

  1. Install and sign in to your cloud storage's desktop app, such as OneDrive, Google Drive for desktop, Dropbox, or iCloud Drive (Mac).
  2. Inside your synced cloud folder, create a folder named BodyMetrix Backups.
    • OneDrive: usually C:\Users\<you>\OneDrive\ on Windows
    • Google Drive: usually the Google Drive or My Drive folder in File Explorer or Finder
    • Dropbox: usually C:\Users\<you>\Dropbox\ on Windows, or Dropbox in Finder
  3. In BodyMetrix, click Choose Folder... in Automatic Backups and select that BodyMetrix Backups folder.
  4. Click Back Up Now, then confirm the new .bmx file appears in your cloud storage online.

Tips:

  • Keep the cloud app running and signed in, or backups will save locally but won't upload.
  • Using a work or school computer? Use the cloud storage your organization approves, such as your district's OneDrive.
  • Backups are encrypted with your backup password before they reach the cloud.

Automatic backups vs. Export Backup

  • Automatic Backups: scheduled, ongoing protection. Older backups are removed based on your Keep last setting.
  • Export Backup (under Export & Transfer): a one-time copy with its own password, for moving to another computer, archiving a milestone, or sending to support. Exported files are never removed automatically. See Move BodyMetrix to a New Computer.

Restore a backup
Use Restore from a BodyMetrix backup in the Setup Wizard on a new computer, or the restore option on the Setup & Migration page. See Move BodyMetrix to a New Computer.
