How BodyMetrix Works
How the BodyMetrix Ultrasound System measures body composition
The Platform
BodyMetrix is two parts that work together: the BX2K ultrasound wand and the BodyMetrix Software Subscription. They aren't sold or used separately, because the wand operates through the Software.
How the measurement works
- The wand sends short sound pulses into the body at each measurement site.
- The pulses reflect back from the boundaries between tissue layers: skin to fat, fat to fascia, and fascia to muscle.
- BodyMetrix times how long each echo takes to return and converts that into a direct measurement of each layer's thickness.
- The Software combines the site measurements using your selected formula to calculate body fat percentage.
This is A-mode (single beam) ultrasound.
Consistent results
BodyMetrix measures tissue directly. It doesn't estimate from fluid resistance, so results aren't affected by hydration, food intake, caffeine, exercise, or time of day. A 7 AM assessment before training and a 3 PM assessment after a session on the same client produce the same result.
Scans
Beyond the numbers, BodyMetrix creates a cross-sectional view of the tissue layers at each site, showing fat, fascia, and muscle in a single image. Scans can be compared visit after visit.
How long it takes
- 3-site protocol: about 90 seconds
- 7-site protocol: under 5 minutes
Intended use
BodyMetrix is intended for use on generally healthy adults and children 6 or older. It's not intended for diagnosis of any disease or condition.
